What is Oily skin?
Oily and congested skin happens when the skin produces more oil than it needs, which can lead to blocked pores, blackheads and breakouts. It’s very common — particularly in younger skin — but it can affect any age, and often comes and goes with hormones, stress and the seasons.
Oily and congested skin happens when the skin produces more oil, or sebum, than it actually needs. That excess oil combines with dead skin cells and everyday debris to block the pores, which is what leads to congestion, blackheads, enlarged-looking pores and breakouts. It’s one of the most common skin types we see — especially in younger skin — but it can genuinely affect any age.
The amount of oil our skin produces is driven by a few things. Genetics play a big role, but hormones are often the main influence, which is why oiliness and congestion tend to flare with puberty, monthly cycles, stress and other hormonal shifts. The seasons, diet and climate can all tip the balance too. One thing many people don’t realise is that over-cleansing or using harsh, stripping products can actually make things worse — when the skin is stripped of its natural oils, it often responds by producing even more, creating a frustrating cycle.
The reassuring part is that oily and congested skin responds really well to the right, balanced approach. Rather than stripping the skin, we focus on gently regulating oil, deep-cleansing the pores and refining the complexion with a consistent routine and targeted professional treatments — clarifying the skin while keeping its natural barrier healthy.
During your consultation, we’ll take a proper look at your skin, work out what’s driving the oiliness and congestion, and create a personalised plan to balance, clear and freshen your complexion.
