What is Hair Loss & Hair Thinning?

Hair loss and thinning are far more common than many people realise — particularly in women — yet they’re rarely talked about openly, which can make them feel isolating and distressing. Whether it’s gradual thinning, a widening parting, or more noticeable shedding, changes to our hair can affect confidence deeply. The reassuring news is that in many cases there’s a great deal we can do, especially when we understand what’s behind it.

Hair thinning can have a wide range of causes, which is exactly why a tailored approach matters so much. Genetics play a significant role, but hormones are often a major factor too — many women notice changes after pregnancy, during the perimenopause and menopause, or at other times of hormonal shift. Stress, nutritional deficiencies (such as low iron), thyroid imbalances, certain medical conditions and the natural ageing process can all contribute as well. Sometimes it’s one cause; often it’s a combination. Because of this, identifying the underlying triggers is the essential first step — treating the surface alone rarely gives lasting results.

At Helen Hunt Medical Aesthetics, we take a considered, medically-led approach to hair thinning. Depending on what we find, we may recommend treatments that stimulate the scalp and hair follicles, encourage regeneration and improve the health of the hair, often alongside blood tests to uncover any internal causes that need addressing. Our focus is always on realistic, natural improvement and supporting your hair health over the longer term.

During your consultation, we’ll take the time to understand your hair, your health and your history, and create a personalised plan designed to support stronger, healthier hair growth.
