What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are one of the most common skin concerns there is — the vast majority of us have them somewhere, and they’re a completely normal, natural part of how skin responds to change. They’re nothing to feel self-conscious about, but if they bother you, it’s reassuring to know there are genuine ways to improve their appearance.

They form when the skin stretches more quickly than it can comfortably keep up with — during growth spurts and puberty, pregnancy, or periods of weight or muscle change. This rapid stretching disrupts the collagen and elastin in the deeper layer of the skin, essentially creating a fine scar. Hormones play a part too, which is why they’re so common during pregnancy and adolescence.

It helps to know that stretch marks go through two stages, because it affects how they respond to treatment. When they’re new, they tend to look red, pink or purple (this is when they respond best to treatment). Over time they mature and fade to a paler, silvery-white — these older marks are more stubborn but can still be softened. Understanding which stage yours are at is part of planning the right approach.

The treatments that help most are those that work with the skin’s own repair processes — stimulating fresh collagen and elastin to gradually smooth texture and improve the colour and appearance of the marks over a course of sessions. We’re always honest that stretch marks can rarely be erased completely, but real, visible improvement is very achievable.

During your consultation, we’ll take a look at your stretch marks, explain what’s realistic for your skin, and create a personalised plan focused on gentle, natural improvement — with no pressure and no judgement.
