What’s involved with the Skin Cryotherapy Treatment

aesthetics treatment

An overview of the Treatment

Careful assessment of the area is required to exclude basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or any suspicious lesions such as melanoma. If any areas are thought to be suspicious we will refer you back to your GP for further investigation.

Local anaesthetic is not normally needed, the procedure lasts a few seconds. The TargetCool device is used to directly target the area to be treated. The freezing temperatures cause cell destruction of the abnormal cells; however it leaves healthy surrounding skin unaffected.
During this treatment, patients may notice a frost or ice-field on top of the lesion which goes away within a few seconds, this is normal. Often Helen will use the freeze-thaw-freeze technique.

The area is treated and then allowed to rest for 30 seconds and a second treatment applied whereby the tissue will freeze faster the second time around. Some skin imperfections require only 1 treatment , whereas others may require more, Helen will discuss this with you during your consultation. Aftercare treatment (SPF factor 50) will be advised for facial areas. It is advisable to leave the area uncovered as this speeds up the healing process and patients can return to normal activities following treatment.

However, Helen may apply a simple dressing or plaster if there is a chance that the site may get rubbed or aggravated in any way. It is important not to pick at the scab, to avoid scarring.

Some skin lesions may re-grow after treatment. That does not mean the treatment was not done correctly. It is just that the success rate of treatment is never 100%. Repeat treatments may be necessary.
