Effective for muscle spasms and pain

What conditions and disorders affect shoulder muscles?

The shoulder joint is extremely flexible, so the muscles and other soft tissues around it undergo a lot of wear and tear. This makes the shoulder muscles susceptible to injuries and degenerative conditions, including:

    • Adhesive capsulitis: Also called frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis occurs when the capsule around your shoulder joint gets thick and stiff. It can lead to spasms, pain and extreme stiffness in your shoulder muscles.
    • Bursitis: Shoulder bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (tiny, fluid-filled sacs) in your shoulders. The inflammation can make it hard to move your shoulder joint and may cause muscle irritation.
    • Rotator cuff injury: Rotator cuff injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, usually affect tendons but can also involve muscles.
    • Shoulder impingement syndrome: If your shoulder muscles or tendons rub against bones too much, the soft tissues might become painful and inflamed. Another name for shoulder impingement
      syndrome
      is swimmer’s shoulder.
    • Strain: A shoulder strain is the result of overstretched muscle fibres.

Other causes of neck and shoulder spasm:

      • Straining your neck whilst exercising
      • Placing a heavy load on one of your shoulders
      • Carrying something heavy with one or both arms
      • Cradling your phone between your neck/shoulders and ears
      • Sleeping in an odd positions
      • Emotional stress
      • Poor posture ie slouching
      • Dehydration

Relaxing these muscles reduces their ability to spasm. This treatment is entirely safe when performed by medically trained professionals and results can last up to 4 months.

Botox is a recognised and approved treatment for persistent muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders. Due to the larger muscle size considerably more Botox is used than in regular facial injections and for this reason the costs are higher.

      Approvals

Botox was approved in 2010 as a treatment for persistent muscle spasm in the neck and shoulders in the UK by drug regulators MHRA; after having been previously approved by the FDA in the US.

      What are Botox injections?

Injections of Botulinum Toxin A, are used to temporarily relax muscle spasm in the neck and shoulders. Tiny amounts of product are injected into specific muscles with a very fine needle. They lessen the affected muscle’s ability to contract as strongly, resulting decreased pain and discomfort.

      Are Botox injections safe?

Botulinum Toxin injections are extremely safe, especially in the medically qualified hands of a Nurse Practitioner. I only use genuine Botox which is licensed specifically for aesthetic, cosmetic use and in the treatment of should and neck spasm

When will I see my results?

You will usually see an improvement within 2 weeks after the injection. The maximum effect is usually seen about 6 weeks after treatment.

How long will my results last?

Results typically vary between patients as everybody processes the toxin differently. As a general rule, you can expect your results to last for around three to four months. You may return for a further treatment at 10 weeks.

Do I need to perform any aftercare?

It is recommended not to undergo any shoulder or neck massage massage for two weeks following treatment. Keep your skin clean where injections have been placed. You will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours after your treatment. I will provide you with an aftercare leaflet, and, of course, if you have any questions or concerns please contact me for advice.
